My Month In Hair: February

The Regimen:

  • Co-wash weekly with As I Am Coconut CoWash which i adore! you get a great amount, no lather super soft and creamy cleanse and it has a nice sweet tangy scent because of the tangerine
  • Condition with As I Am Hydration Elation which i have raved about on my channel it defines like nobody's business and is super moisturising.  It's a tad pricey but it absorbs well into my low porosity hair but i admit I didn't deep condition which would have been beneficial.
  • Then i cornrowed my hair and wore it under my wig which is the freetress 'patsy' unit which was originally 18 inches but it was chopped to around 12 inches
  • Throughout the week i would spritz my hair with water and apply shea moistures restorative conditioner and then seal with shea butter
  • the few days i filmed hair tutorials or for example wore twists to valentines day meal instead of my wig i styled using curls goddess curls gele and i really like it! light hold, not sticky and supposedly great for humidity (anti shrinkage!)

I will be doing a full product line review on my youtube channel soon so look out for that! I loved wearing this wig i could wake up super late and not have to worry about taking my hair down or the weather messing it up. The cut length works great for me as its more my style than super long and straight and i love the ombre it was cool to see how my skin tone looks against light brown/blonde. I wouldn't say it was super duper protective though because the constant braiding plus wig balancing on my hairline caused my edges to look worse for wear again. My hair was clean so i could have gone longer between co washes however my scalp was crazy itchy and flaky maybe because the scalp between braids was exposed and the heat under the wig dried it out even when i applied my oil mix.

This wasn't a bad month in retaining moisture etc but my hair did tangle even though it was braided so takedowns were stressful plus my scalp was dry though my hair itself was clean and smelled like it was freshly washed.

My Month In Hair: January

We have ran out of January. I can't believe we're in February already, settling right in to 2016. So i'm going to skip the new year stuff (since i missed it, naughty me) and let you know of the first of many new posts coming to my blog: My month in hair, talking about the products and methodology used on my hair and whether it's working or not and how i find the mix of products.

i wore faux loc extensions as a protective style for the first half and sadly it hasn't been as protective as i would have hoped. I found the style really tight around my nape and the locs were so stiff i could really only wear them down and its a shame as i found all the styles available to me so cute! i used marley hair to braid and wrap.

The Regimen:

  • I shampoo'd weekly instead of cowashing this month and used my ol' faithful shea moisture retention shampoo which is so nourishing and soft doesn't strip at all (sulphate free). I'm so pleased that Boots has decided to stock it in the UK!
  • I deep conditioned after every wash without heat using sm manuka honey deep conditioner but it's very light and just...meh.
  • Every so often i would go in with my oil mix and apply that to my scalp and give my head a massage to stimulate blood flow and growth.
  • To moisturise i used the very basic, water from a spritz bottle
  • A new company called modie contacted and sent me their moisturising hair creme and oh my.. it's so deeply moisturising without being greasy or heavy, as it's oil based i use it to seal in my spritz, and my hair feels good for days.

Apart from the modie creme, my hair hasn't been as moisturised as i would like. My hair needs a trim and weirdly, because of the faux locs, more protective styling. This month my hair needs repairing.

Bathtime is Lush.

Bathtime was annoying as a kid unless i could get those mermaid shaped foam cremes or bring my barbie in with me but now bathtime is cherished! i love relaxing in a warm tub and so over Christmas
I was lucky enough to be gifted lots of Lush products and also purchased a few of my own so thought i would share these delightful goodies with you! (all marked * are xmas edition only)

Soft Coeur
Clever play on words given that this little massage bar has a chocolate core and  'coeur' is french for heart. This smells like chocoloate made with shea and cocoa butter, honey and cocoa powder plus other essential oils it will lock in the moisture during a bath or shower.

Tender is the Night
this melts so quick, made with murumuru butter (which us naturals love for hair) and shea butter it has a soft relaxing scent thanks to the ylang ylang and jasmine oil. Another massage bar to soften the skin.

Candy Mountain *
HOLLA ALL MY SWEET TOOTHS this smells like a candy store dream, very sweet. Unfortunately the top of mine crumbled off but this bath bomb will leave you sugary and everyone will want to lick you.

Sunnyside
A bubble bar to create a cascade of gold foam, super glittery and a good pick me up on dreary days. Has a mild citrus scent.

The Comforter
Not to be confused with the comforter? another lush product this is a super fruity sweet bubble bar. Smells like raspberry and citrus fruits and will create big blackcurrant bubbles, you can split this bar for more than one use.

Golden Wonder *
OMG i cannot praise this one enough, i had two in my gift box and it creates a magical experience so it no wonder its shaped like a present. A citrus scent. There will be little stars in your bathtub- be aware to wash tub corners after use though the glitter tends to stick.

Lord of Misrule *
Looks plain but it has popping candy for an exciting bath experience. A bath bomb with a very soapy smell but not in an off putting way a more relaxing way.

Father Christmas *
I reallllyy should have used this one by now but i haven't haha. Its a bath bomb with not only a friendly face but a marshmallowy edible chalk stick type scent.

Christmas Eve*
A nice and simple bubble bar with calming ylang ylang and irish moss powder.
Cinders *
Apologies for my shoddy photography skills as i didnt capture the ball of popping candy on the other side! i thought it was a plain little bath bomb, but the candy has a striking gingery citrus smell that reminds me of an expensive candle. Its made with almond oil, sea salt  and cinnamon
(thats the peppery striking smell i got) I'm yet to use this either but i'm sure it'll be a treat!

Lush is a great place if you love spoiling yourself with bathtime treats. They also do skin, hair and other body products like toothpaste and perfume. What's great is their products are fresh, handmade, ethically sourced and they don't ever accept products tested on animals (alot of veggie and vegan products too) so you get all the natural goodness and will feel good about it too.

Who wants a bath now? Hope you enjoyed this post x

My, my, my edges.

I've had a serious battle with my hairline. As alot of us do but it seems to be more so in the black community. I do actually have a few of those coveted baby hairs but i rarely catch and gel them so they look non existent and yes i do have a large forehead but i am unashamed in fact i have a slight dislike for fringes on myself; i love showing my forehead, and i share the forehead sisterhood with some good looking intelligent people. However something i was slightly embarrassed by was my edges- or lack there of. Back when my hair was relaxed i had trouble trusting stylists to do my hair as they were scissor happy and often experimented with old fashioned hairstyles i never asked for. The problem with this distrust was that i kept trying different salons and stylists meaning i would get different chemical relaxers (everything from QP to Olive Oil by ORS) and different techniques of applications which left my hair over and under processed. Alongside that I wore my hair in high buns and ponytails and straightened my hair more often than i should. A combination of this caused me to lose my fragile hairline. No not just lose a couple hairs but go BALD. Here's some pictures of the offending edges!

It was first brought to my attention in january 2013- the last time i relaxed professionally. I thought nothing of it until again i saw small thinning around April. Then in June 2013 i really took a good look and saw it was bald, about 5cm on the right side and about 2cm on the left.
(RIGHT SIDE) Look at those stringy relaxer ends. LAWD. i am holding my wispy hair back i can't believe i've cut this all off.
(LEFT SIDE) So plan of action: do a long stretch before the next relaxer (i used to stretch 3/4 months it was suggested i do a full year), stop manipulating my hair, massage emu oil into my missing patch and basically leave it alone.
The above image in september 2013. I stopped relaxing in July and rubbed emu oil in every night. You can see its starting to fill in.
Fast forward to the present and i fell in love with my ringlets and coils and decided to transition to natural.

My edges have grown back i won't say fully as there is still thinness but i no longer pull on my hair in anyway and stopping the relaxer truly helped not only with my hairline but to embrace my true self.
If you want to see how i grew my edges back with tips and tricks check out my youtube channel.

Evolution of the twistout.

When i started my natural hair journey i envisioned all the masterful twistouts i would be able to achieve. My hair would unravel to show cascading dark bouncy curls. It would naturally stay in all day because i have curls anyway and i wouldn't need to bobby pin or secure the ends overnight because my coils would lock around each other doing the job for me. I had seen many different ways of achieving twistouts on youtube and instagram but they never seemed to work for me. For one my hair wouldn't cascade but rather ascend to the heavens and for the life of me i couldn't figure out this 'definition' people spoke of. All frizz. All day. This worried me because i thought i would have to wear my hair in an afro constantly (which i mainly do) and therefore my hair would become boring to me as i couldn't do anything with it and also wearing hair out all the time to face the environment can sometimes result in breakage be it snagging on clothes or rubbing against clothes/car seats. I hated twistouts and often didn't get on with braidouts either but one fateful day i decided to give it one. more. try. Voila! i liked it! i could face the public in it, you could see curls, it was somewhat hanging downward; there was no definition but by Jove i done it! Practice most definitely makes perfect and i think its worth exploring your own hair by yourself not looking to others- heck my headshape and the amount of hair i have is different to others so sometimes i can't do 15 twists on my head- So if you're struggling with natural hair styles try and try again and TRY THEM ALL. invent your own as well, we need more than a pompadour. I hit another bump in the road when i tried some gel to get more curl definition and all i got was grey flakes allllll over my hair and shoulders, how embarrassing, but i suppose that's why its called a journey and not a destination. Here's a picture of my first voila moment after a twistout and the second picture is my most recent twistout (before the gel disaster). I now have my method and am exploring other ways to getting that good good soft like butter twistout. Hope you enjoyed my post! x

One Year Natural BABY!

this fro of mine has flourished in the past 4 months. I decided to stop relaxing my hair July 13th 2013 and did the big chop on April 29th 2014. I know people don't consider themselves natural (referring to my state of hair) until all of the chemically processed hair is removed but i treated my hair as i do fully natural from the day i stopped relaxing, plus its easier to get a timeline of my hair growth. Here's to many more years with afro hair; i'm enjoying my curls and exploring hairstyles and loving the fact that i can fully love a natural me.

On the evening of my big chop

a picture from a couple of weeks ago!

And here's a picture just after a co-wash. As though my hair hasn't grown at all! Shrinkage is a crazy thing. Hope you've enjoyed my post x
